Brick Slurry Finish: The Stucco Look Without the Stucco

A slurry coat covers brick in a full layer of mortar wash for a soft, stucco-like finish that still shows the brick's shape. How it works, how it differs from German smear, and what to expect.

The short version

A slurry is a mortar wash applied as full coverage. It uses the same basic materials as German smear — portland cement, lime, sand, water — but instead of leaving brick exposed, it coats nearly all of it. The result reads like a hand-applied stucco or plaster finish, while the outline and texture of the brick still show through underneath. It’s permanent.

Why homeowners choose slurry

  • You want the brick color gone but don’t want the flat, plastic look of paint
  • You love the look of stucco or limestone homes but not the cost and maintenance of a full stucco system
  • You want a monolithic, modern-Mediterranean or modern-farmhouse exterior

Slurries are commonly done in warm whites and soft tan or sand tones rather than stark white, which keeps them from looking chalky in strong sun.

How it’s applied

  1. Masonry repairs and cleaning — critical, because slurry highlights cracks
  2. Dampen the wall
  3. Apply the slurry over the full surface with brushes, trowels, or sprayers
  4. Work the texture: brushed, sponged, or lightly troweled
  5. Slow cure, protected from hard rain and direct afternoon sun
  6. Breathable water-repellent sealer recommended

Things to know

  • It’s a one-way decision. Like German smear, cured slurry doesn’t come off without damaging brick.
  • Expansion and movement show. Slurry is rigid. If the house has active foundation movement, address it first or expect hairline cracks to telegraph through.
  • Light colors show dirt. A sealer and an occasional gentle wash keep it fresh.

Frequently asked questions

Is German smear permanent?
Yes. Cured mortar bonds strongly to brick and can't be removed without aggressive methods that can damage the brick. Be sure of the look — and approve a sample — before committing.
Can I see a sample first?
Yes. After you approve your proposal, Brick Restoration applies a roughly 3×3 ft sample on your home. Work continues only after you sign off.
How do you maintain a brick wash?
Light finishes show dirt over time; a gentle low-pressure wash or scrub usually refreshes them. Sealing a mortar wash with a breathable water repellent after application is strongly recommended.
